Hi, my name is Matt

I’m Matt Patterson, a product designer passionate about all things tech. I grew up in southern California with a big family, I’ve always been fascinated by the tech around me. While I knew I wanted to work in technology, my true driving force is connecting with others. I approach everything with curiosity, eager to explore different perspectives and experiences.

When I’m not product designing, you can find me hanging with my partner and our dog Olive, tinkering with my home office setup, or practicing my golf game.

How it all started

I always knew I wanted to work in tech in some way. I started as a project manager at a small CRM during college where I was working with big clients and helping developers craft custom projects. I moved into product from there and kept taking new roles with more responsibility. Once I got to Kajabi as one of the first PMs there, I was in for some incredible growth and opportunities to ship something an actual human would love!

As I was shipping products, running meetings, strategizing the next thing for the team to work on, and writing document after document, I found myself drawn to the holistic and aesthetic experience for our customers. Partnering with product design was my favorite part of the job where our ideas become visual and tangible to tell a story or move the platform forward towards innovation and simplicity. On top of these interests, were a slew of personal feelings I knew I had to make sense of what they were telling me and see what was next for my career.

I had always been split-brained throughout my life where I would gravitate to artistic and emotional expression, while being fascinated by complex and meaningful ideas and systems. I was close to videographers and musicians, but was always taking part in the planning and execution parts of the creative process like mixing and recording. I also noticed that designers were bringing their whole selves to their work and speaking personally with conviction about some part of the experience they were working on and really resonated with me. I was feeling like a black sheep in product management who was obsessed with the experience and impact on the holistic view for the customer and using feeling words to describe things, which was usually met with cold and calculated responses.

So I set out to switch to design after reaching senior product manager at Kajabi, and feel its been the best decision I have made in my career. I learned while on the job and completed Shift Nudge by @MDS and Figma Academy by @Ridd_design and thankfully a position was created for me and after helping Kajabi with what would be their first acquisition, leadership moved me over at the start of 2023! I continue to learn the hard skills of UI design and the ever-changing landscape of product design, but am thrilled to bring my years of product experience to the role and help level up the team’s soft skills around me. I'm a product designer who enjoys collaborating with product managers to define scope for a new project to nurturing the handoff with engineers to begin breaking ground, I enjoy partnering with the whole team to achieve an outcome together.
